Simulation & Human Factors

For the past 5 years I have been working for the NHS at Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust in the department of Simulation and Human Factors. This involves working in a samll team to deliver multiprofessional simulation training for all greades of staff using high fidelity manikins in a variety of recreated settings. It also involves making training and awareness films which are now being used both by the NHS locally as well as nationally. As the sole creative I directed, filmed and edited all of these films.

'MAKE OR BREAK: INCIVILITY IN THE WORKPLACE' - tackling the issues of low level bullying and incivility is used in training for all areas as well as nationally and internationally as far as Australia and currently has over 62K views on Youtube.

'A SEIPS APPROACH TO MATERNITY' - Using the Systems Engineering Initiative for Patient Safety (SEIPS) model this film highlights the complexities involved in maternity care.

'JUST A CUP OF TEA' - An introduction to the Systems Engineering Initiative for Patient Safety (SEIPS) framework.

'LINK ANALYSIS' - A visual way to highlight the frequency of interactions within a specific location and those critical for safety.

'TIME TO REMEMBER' In 2020 I was comissioned by the Epsom and St Helier Palliative Care team to create a video that would, due to the pandemic replace the in person 'Time to Remember' event they hold each year to remember loved ones that have been lost. You can share and view this video here.

Human Factors involves the interaction of humans with technology and systems. All of our work contains human factors elements and we use a specific 'Daimond' model for debriefing training scenarios. I recently became acredited in being able to deliver this style of debriefing.

Our simulation centre based at Epsom General Hospital was the first in the South East to receive acreditation by the Association of SImulation Practitioners in Healthcare in 2019

Since working in Simulation and Human Factors I have given presentations on various ascpects of film making for education as well as exploring the role of creativity in simulation. In 2021 I presented at ASPIH on 'Simulation as Immersive Theatre' which was followed up by publication in the International Journal of Healthcare Simulation.
